Trust me! The best pizza in Rio is inside the super market! Forget what travel guides made by non-brazilian and non-cariocas if you wanna live like a carioca you need to try the pizza from the Zona Sul supermarket! Just the best pizza in neighborhood! This supermarket is exceptionally well located for all your Ipanema needs, as is the other Zona Sul market precisely two blocks away. They cram just about anything you could ever need food-wise into this small supermarket. Except paper towels, for some reason.
The baked goods -- croissants and french rolls in particular -- are excellent.
Guys stocking the aisles are helpful and willing to deal with my poorly-pronounded Portuguese when I'm trying to find stuff.
The checkout ladies aren't the type you find in the US. Don't expect to be greeted with a "Thank you for shopping VonsAlbertsonsSafeway, did you find everything you need?" In fact, don't expect them to move in their chairs: you'll be waved at to scoot items down the checkout counter so they can more easily scan them.
VISA and MasterCards of the chip and the old-school slide-variety are accepted. What's begrudgingly accepted is a R$50 bill when you have under $R10 in purchases. I'm not sure if debit cards work.
